Advance notification for overnight trial holes

What are trial holes and why do you need to do them?

We have previously informed you that our major water mains renewal scheme in Diplocks Way is planned to start in early October. To help us determine the exact route along Diplocks Way, and the most efficient method of installing the new water main, it is important to dig two trial holes within the carriageway of Diplocks Way.

A trial hole is an excavation which enables the team to confirm the location of existing utilities, to ensure they are avoided when the new water main is being installed as well as confirming the existing ground conditions.

When and where will these trial holes be dug?

The trial holes will be dug overnight on Wednesday 20 September, Thursday 21 September and, if needed, Friday 22 September, starting each evening at 7pm until the early hours of the following day.

Will the trial holes be left open until you start the scheme?

No. The two trial holes will be backfilled to enable normal traffic flow until the scheme starts in early October.

How will these trial holes impact me?

One of our key objectives is to work closely with customers and businesses to ensure the impact of this work is kept to an absolute minimum. We are confident the trial hole works won’t impact on you, since the works will be done overnight and we will work closely with any businesses that work into the evenings or have night shifts.
