On average we use 160 litres of water a day and most of this is used in the home for cooking, drinking, washing and toilet flushing. Small changes in our daily routine can help conserve vital supplies.
Wash with a full load
Always use washing machines and dishwashers with a full load. Each washing machine cycle uses up to 100 litres of water and dishwashers up to 50 litres.
Purchase Power
When buying a new washing machine or dishwasher, choose one that is water efficient, find out more.
Take a Shower
Take a shower instead of a bath, but using a power shower for 5 minutes can use more than a bath! Why not fit a simple free device to your shower to save water and energy at the same time? Find out more here.
Water friendly flushing
About one-third of the water we use is flushed down the toilet. Fit a new cistern which uses about seven litres of water or put a Save a Flush Bag in an old cistern to save a litre with every flush. If you have a dual-flush cistern, use the light flush whenever possible, please contact us.
Cleaning your teeth
Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and use a glass of water to rinse. A family of four can save a bathful of water every day by following this example.
Peeling vegetables
Don’t clean and peel vegetables under a running tap, put the plug in and use the sink. A tap left running for 10 minutes uses nearly 100 litres of water.
Washing the car
Wash your car with a bucket and sponge – a hosepipe can use up to 1,000 litres of water in an hour.
Fix dripping taps
Dripping tips can waste a lot of water and usually only need a new washer which can be simple to fix.
Lag your pipes
By lagging your pipes you keep them warm which helps prevent them bursting in cold weather, flooding your home and wasting water. It also helps reduce heating bills.
