Water efficiency

The South East of England is one of the driest regions of the country and increasing housing growth will make further demands on the amount of water available.

On average we each use 160 litres of water per person every day. It’s important we use water wisely so there are sufficient supplies of this precious resource for everyone now and in the future.

It’s very easy for us all to make a few simple changes in our daily lives which together will ensure we can have a secure supply of top quality drinking water.

Water use restrictions now in effect:

Water use restrictions: full detailsTemporary water use restrictions are now in effect after one of the driest two-year periods since records began. The use of hosepipes for watering gardens, washing cars, patios and boats and for filling swimming and paddling pools, ponds and fountains will not be permitted.

What we are doing

Leakage detection
Leakage detection and reduction is a priority for South East Water. Often, leaks occur underground and are not visible on the surface, and can therefore be difficult to detect. However, by using the very latest technology, we have achieved considerable success in minimising water lost through leakage.

It is important that we are able to repair leaks on our water mains as quickly as possible. If you believe you have spotted a leak in the road, pathway or verge, help us by letting us know: Report a leak.

An estimated one third of leakage occurs in the underground supply pipes of our customers' properties. To help tackle this South East Water has a Code of Practice for Leakage on Customers' Supply Pipes.

Water meters
South East Water offers all its customers free water meters which allow you to pay only for the water you use. By using water efficiently in your home and garden you can make significant savings on your water bill.

Water meters are fitted to your water supply pipe and measure the amount of water which passes from the water main into your home. Your bill is calculated on this amount, plus a standing charge, rather than on the rateable value of your home.

Want help deciding whether a water meter is right for you and your household? You can do this with our online water calculator.
