Tip of the day

Monday: Don’t clean and peel vegetables under a running tap, put the plug in and use the sink. A tap left running for 10 minutes uses nearly 100 litres of water.

Tuesday: Wash your car with a bucket and sponge – a hosepipe can use up to 1,000 litres of water in an hour.

Wednesday: Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and use a glass of water to rinse. A family of four can save a bathful of water every day by following this example.

Thursday: By lagging your pipes you keep them warm which helps prevent them bursting in cold weather, flooding your home and wasting water. It also helps reduce heating bills.

Friday: Dripping taps can waste a lot of water and usually only need a new washer which can be simple to fix. One dripping tap can waste 5,500 litres of water a year.
