This year we experienced a summer like never before, with little to no rain, record-breaking temperatures and incredibly high water demand.
Ground movement caused by dry soil increased the number of leaks by 50 per cent in Kent and Sussex. Combined with an exceptional demand for water putting immense pressure on our network, we needed to take action.
We increased the number of teams fixing leaks and implemented a hosepipe ban for our customers in Kent and Sussex, to ensure we could keep the taps running for everyone.
It's not just people who rely on water to survive. It's imperative for the environment and the wildlife within it to thrive. Our reservoirs and water sources are homes to various birds, fish and other wildlife. Our reservoir levels dropped quickly, and it was vital we acted quickly to protect the precious local habitats that rely on them too.
With the hosepipe ban in place, the significant rain in November and customers continuing to be conscious of their water use, our reservoirs have recovered enough for us to lift the ban.
However, we need our customers to continue to be mindful of their water use where possible to help our rivers and reservoirs on the final leg of their journey to recovery.
It’s easy to make just a few simple swaps to save water at home. Simply turning off the tap when brushing your teeth or reusing your cooking water for watering plants will really make a difference.
