Water Saving Week: Water and Social Justice

16th May 2022

Taking place between 23 and 27 May, Water Saving Week is an annual week created by Waterwise to raise awareness of the issues around water use.

Each day of the week has been given a theme; Tuesday's theme is Water and Social Justice. It’s important that clean, safe water is accessible and affordable for all, and that's why we work closely with councils in our supply area to ensure our customers who need help the most, get it.

We work with both Maidstone and Tonbridge and Malling Council to assist our customers most in need. We use data held by ourselves and the council to identify our customers who qualify for our social tariff, and automatically enrol them on to it.

Social Tariff

On our social tariff, water-in charges are capped at £157.78 for the year, and a 25 percent discount is placed on waste water charges too. At South East Water, we don’t deal with waste water or sewage, but we do bill on your waste water service provider. To find out who your waste water supplier is, please use the button below.

Any of our customers can apply for the social tariff, free of charge. To be eligible, your household income will be less than £16,385 for the year.

WaterSure

For customers with a medical condition, or those with three or more children under the age of 19 and are in receipt of certain benefits, we have the WaterSure tariff. On this tariff, water-in charges are capped at £238.12, and water-out charges at £231.00.

Water Direct

For our customers who are in receipt of income support, Pension Credit, Income-based jobseekers’ or ESA, we may be able to take deductions straight from your benefits.

This scheme is free and means our customers on Water Direct won’t have to worry about any debt recovery action, because the current years’ charges, plus a fixed amount to help clear the arrears, will be paid.

This tariff is a third party scheme, administered by the Department For Work and Pensions.
