We’re planning to repair the slippage along a section of the embankment at Ardingly Reservoir.
A section of the bank – close to Ardingly Activity Centre – has slipped in recent years.
In 2023, we carried out urgent repairs as part of the first phase of work to prevent further damage, lowering heavy gravel bags into the water to prevent the slippage from worsening.
A more permanent solution is required and we’re planning to complete this over the coming months.
What is going to happen?
We’re now preparing to carry out the next phase of remedial works at Ardingly Reservoir, which includes a long-term solution to repair the slipped embankment.
This includes the piling of tubes 15 metres into the ground, via a barge, to strengthen the embankment and reduce the risk of further issues.
When will this be happening?
In order to carry out this essential work, we will need to close Ardingly Reservoir car park, the Activity Centre and Café for a period of around 12 months, for the safety of the public and our workforce.
This will be from Sunday, 20 September, and from this time, there will be no vehicular access to the car park at Ardingly Reservoir.
We are sorry for the disruption and inconvenience this project may cause and we’ll work as quickly as possible to complete the work.
There may be teams working on the project out of sight in the early stages as part of the preparations to carry out the remedial work on site, before the project starts in earnest in the autumn.
While the car park will be closed to vehicles, public access will be maintained to the Walking Trail during the course of the work, with a banksman in place during working hours to help keep members of the public away from construction traffic.
There will be additional construction traffic accessing the site during the course of the works and we’ll work to minimise disruption as much as possible.
We’re also in discussion with Ardingly College, which shares the access route to the site and temporary traffic lights and public rights of way closures may be necessary at times during the project.
