We have been working collaboratively with Southern Water to extend the life of a burst prone water main in Netherfield Road, Battle.

In a £70,000 investment, we have taken the opportunity while the road was closed to install air valves on our existing drinking water main. By installing air valves, the pressure within the pipe can be better managed and should reduce the likelihood of future bursts until we are able to replace the main.

Work started on Monday 11 September.

We appreciate that the community would have liked our fresh drinking water main to be replaced at the same time as Southern Water had the road closed.

However, we were unable to do this while they were undertaking work on the sewer network due to limited space for both teams to carry out their work safely, as well as the risk of contamination from their sewerage pipe and our fresh drinking water pipe.

The installation of the air valves is part of a wider review of the operation of this part of our network, and we will continue to monitor the pipework in this area to review if we need to undertake works to replace the main in the near future while minimising disruption to the community.
