We are working to repair a section of a slipped bank close to Ardingly Activity Centre.

The slippage worsened during the summer of 2022 when the reservoir was low, and it has been necessary to carry out urgent repairs to prevent further damage and potential impact to water quality.

Repair work is being split into two phases. The first phase started in May 2023 and we have since placed almost 450 large bags of gravel near the toe of the slip to add load to the embankment close to Ardingly Activity Centre.

During the work, the car park had fewer spaces available for visitors, while the paths from the western roads to the reservoir were closed.

Work was completed in June, with the slipway and walking paths being re-opened to the public, while reservoir activities have resumed and water sport courses, including sailing, are expected to take place in the school summer holidays. Please contact the centre(opens in a new tab) for further information.

The second phase of the project will be a permanent repair and we will update this page with the plans for a long-term fix once they have been finalised.

Recognition at Ground Engineering Awards

As part of the design and investigation for the first phase of the project, we carried out bathymetric and drone surveys to generate a detailed 3D surface of the slip, both above ground and below the water line.

The surveys enabled our design team to define the exact extents of the impacted area and determine the scope of the work needed.

This innovative work was recognised recently at the Ground Engineering Awards 2023, as a finalist in the Technical Excellence category of the Geotechnical Engineering awards on 12 July.
