South East Water unveils Holywell mural

28th July 2021

A stunning mural depicting a fox which has replaced graffiti on the clifftop in Holywell, East Sussex, will wow passers-by.

The piece was designed and created by award-winning street artist Sarah Gillings, who worked in partnership with South East Water to revamp a defaced gate.

Residents were asked to vote on what they would like to see painted and an overwhelming majority opted for a fox amid some local wildflowers.

Sarah’s artwork features a red fox and some spiked rampion flowers – both of which are native to the local area.

Whilst painting the piece, she was paid a special visit by children from Bedes Nursery in Dukes Drive, Holywell, who quizzed her about the artwork.

Sarah said: “I’m delighted at how the piece has turned out and the reaction from the local community and the children has been absolutely incredible.

“I was so happy at how many people took part in the survey and I hope residents and tourists can enjoy the mural for years to come.”

The mural was officially unveiled on Tuesday, 27 July by Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Pat Rodohan.

“This fantastic artwork is something which the entire community can benefit from”, said Cllr Rodohan.

“It is clear everyone appreciates the mural and I am grateful to South East Water for commissioning this work.”

Jenny Rhodes, Regional Production Manager at South East Water, added: “We know this gate had become an eyesore for the local residents so we wanted to do something special for the community.

“We’re thrilled at how the gate has turned out and we hope the artwork will help to deter vandals from painting on it.”
