Strengthening the water network in Alton

9th April 2024

South East Water will soon be carrying out a £166,000 project to reinforce the water network in Alton.

The drinking water supplier will be installing 180 metres of new water mains along Chawton Park Road to support the network amid development in the area.

Work is due to start on Monday, 22 April 2024 and as a safety precaution for pedestrians, motorists and the workforce, a small section of Chawton Park Road will be closed between Beechwood Road and Connaught Way, with a diversion in place via the A31.

Access to Alton Community Hospital and local amenities will be maintained, but the direction vehicles may need to come from may vary due to the closure.

South East Water Project Manager, Jeremy Dufour, said: “This is an important project for us to improve our network.

“With new development in the area, we need to reinforce our network to maintain supplies now and in the future.

“By carrying out this work now, we will be supporting our existing and future customers, as well as increasing resilience in the event of bursts or leakage.

“As with any work, we know there may be some disruption for residents and businesses locally and we apologise for this, but please be assured we will work as quickly and safely as possible to try to finish the project sooner and minimise disruption.

“Work will take place during normal working hours, but there may also be some activity at evenings and weekends.”

This project is part of South East Water’s commitment to invest £489 million to improve the water supply infrastructure between 2020 and 2025.
