Starts: Monday 22 September
Duration: Approx. 10 weeks
Investment: £280,000
Project completed
We’ve made the water supply network in Pluckley more reliable by replacing around 640 metres of an ageing, burst-prone main in Smarden Bell Road.
We worked in two phases to minimise disruption to the public:
- Phase one: just west of Frith Court Farm to the junction with Mundy Bois Road
- Phase two: from the junction with Mundy Bois Road to the junction with Rose Farm Road and The Pinnock

Return to Smarden Bell Road
With Biddenden Road and Bethersden Road both reopened, we’ll be returning to Smarden Bell Road, on Monday 18 May, for approximately four weeks. The final section of work requires us to slip-line the existing main within the bridge to strengthen the pipeline and lengthen its working life.
To carry out our work safely, we’ll need to close Smarden Bell Road between the junctions with Mundy Bois Road and Rose Farm Lane.
We know how disruptive road closures are, and our team will work as quickly as possible to complete the work sooner.

We are sorry for any additional disruption caused by the two-week delay in our programme. We have returned the road to its original condition and we are leaving the area today.
We have one last section of pipework to install and are working with Highways to find a suitable time to complete this section.
We would like to thank the community for their patience during these works to improve the water supply in the area.

Most of the new pipework has been laid, with just the section crossing the bridge to be completed by slip-lining the existing main to minimise disruption. Once completed, we'll be testing the entire section of main and making it ready to supply drinking water. The programme has been extended by two weeks, and we are aiming to complete the project before Christmas.

We've excavated the remaining 140 metres, with the final stretch of pipeline being laid this week. Once laid, we'll need to test the pipe and make it ready to supply treated water.
We're currently two weeks behind schedule but are working hard to complete the project as soon as possible.

We're now excavating past the junction of Mundy Bois Road and are preparing for the next section of main to be laid using the drilling method. This means will be digging a number of pits rather than a long trench in the road.

Project started
Our project started last week, and we have set up our compound, and closed the road. A diversion is now in place and signposted. We urge all motorists to follow this diversion for the safety of all road users as well as our team.
We've excavated the required pits to allow us to directionally drill the first section of new main, which we'll be doing later this week.
